TEHRAN (NIPNA) – The Deputy Minister of Petroleum and Managing Director of the National Petrochemical Company (NPC), Hassan Abbaszadeh, emphasized the critical role of artificial intelligence (AI) in driving transformation within Iran's petrochemical industry.

Speaking at the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement for developing an AI assistant for the petrochemical sector, Abbaszadeh noted, “Given the global advancements in knowledge and technology, we must fully leverage AI’s potential in the petrochemical industry to ensure sustainable development.”

Abbaszadeh highlighted that Iran’s petrochemical industry has achieved remarkable growth due to its advanced infrastructure. "The use of cutting-edge technologies, technical knowledge, and licenses forms the backbone of the petrochemical industry, which has made it a leader in technological advancements within the oil and gas sector," he said.

AI Integration Roadmap

Abbaszadeh outlined a roadmap for integrating AI into the sector, which begins with consolidating data from all petrochemical complexes into a central repository for analysis. “Previously, data was manually collected and analyzed for decision-making. Now, AI can help us accelerate future planning and analysis, leading to more informed and efficient decisions,” he added.

He stressed the need to connect petrochemical product markets to a centralized database. “By utilizing AI-driven data analysis, market trends and product demand can be better understood, enabling holding companies to expand their markets and optimize operations.”

Optimizing Operations Through AI

Abbaszadeh explained that AI could also be used to identify high-value products in the supply chain and determine the technologies required to enhance profitability. “AI will allow us to design new units based on national needs and market demands, providing insights on which products offer greater value-added potential.”

Pilot Projects and Partnerships

The Deputy Minister announced that Maroun Petrochemical Company will be the first in the industry to adopt AI-driven solutions. Discussions are also underway with the Western Ethylene Pipeline to explore AI integration for enhanced operations.

Abbaszadeh concluded by calling for collaborative efforts to transform the agreement into actionable projects. "The success of this initiative depends on continuous follow-ups and teamwork to ensure the agreement evolves into a contract and tangible outcomes," he noted.

This strategic move aims to position Iran’s petrochemical industry at the forefront of technological innovation, aligning it with global trends in AI adoption.
