TEHRAN (NIPNA) – Iran renewed its commitment to preserving its wetlands through a joint initiative between the Department of Environment (DOE) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) at a ceremony hosted by Mobin Energy Persian Gulf Company.

The event, attended by Shina Ansari, head of Iran's Department of Environment, and senior officials, marked the extension of the national Wetlands Conservation Plan. Ansari, addressing the gathering, celebrated the registration of Gandoman Wetland as Iran’s 27th site under the Ramsar Convention, an international treaty for wetland conservation.

“Wetlands in Iran face significant threats, including water shortages, pollution from waste and wastewater, and invasive species,” Ansari warned. She emphasized the importance of ensuring the ecological water rights of wetlands, highlighting the obligations set by Clause B of Article 38 in Iran’s Seventh Development Plan. “The Ministry of Energy must prioritize the allocation of water to wetlands,” she added.

Ansari underscored the need for environmental awareness, interagency collaboration, and active participation by local communities in addressing these challenges.

Industrial Commitment to Sustainability

Mehdi Farzaneh, CEO of Mobin Energy Persian Gulf Company, highlighted the firm’s efforts in reducing pollution and protecting the environment. “By leveraging advanced technologies and close cooperation with related organizations, Mobin Energy has positioned itself as a leader in both the petrochemical industry and environmental conservation,” he said.

Farzaneh expressed hope that the event would strengthen cooperation between industries and government bodies to achieve shared environmental goals.

UNDP Acknowledges Iran's Efforts

Stefan Priesner, UN Resident Coordinator in Iran, praised the country’s dedication to the wetlands conservation initiative, calling international collaboration essential for protecting these critical ecosystems.

The Wetlands Conservation Plan focuses on addressing pressing issues such as water resource management and pollution control while fostering sustainable development practices.

The renewed agreement underscores Iran’s ongoing efforts to align industrial growth with environmental protection, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas like the Persian Gulf.
